Biography
1940: Born, the third of six children, in Luebeck, Germany. Father: Horst Schneider, composer and conductor. Mother: Anneliese (maiden name: Rademacher). Residence in Koenigsberg and Sachsen until the end of WW II.
1945-1950: Elementary school in Grainau (Bavaria, Germany), where the family lived in an apartment which was part of their maternal grandfather's house.
1950-1959: Bertold-Gymnasium (High School), Freiburg (Breisgau, Germany). Abitur (Diploma), 1959.
1959-1964: Studies in German, history, and philosophy at the Universities of Freiburg, Munich, and Berlin.
1966-1972: Active in the student movements, in Berlin and Trento (Italy).
Since 1972: resided in Italy, and since 1985, Writer-in-Residence and Visiting Professor at various American universities, including: Stanford, Princeton, Dartmouth, Harvard, Washington University (St. Louis), and Georgetown University.
1996-1997: Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington, D.C.
2000-2006: Roth Distinguished Writer-in-Residence, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
